Rare A Neck Fender Mustang
The neck stamp on this 1964 Fender Mustang reads 8NOV64A. That translates to Mustang neck made November 1964 with an “A” neck width. Fender offered several optional nut widths on their guitars, with the A option 1/8″ narrower than the standard 1 5/8″. This guitar’s neck measures 1 1/2″ wide at the nut with the standard 24″ Mustang scale length. A Necks are quite rare, making up only a small fraction of Fender factory production. The size and feel would be ideal for a younger player or someone with smaller hands.
Fender introduced the Mustang model in 1964, so this is a first year Mustang made during the pre-CBS era with an L plate serial number. All parts date to late 1964, including the potentiometers and gray bobbin pickups. The original tortoise pattern pickguard stands out from the Olympic White finish. Note the correct factory markings in the neck pocket, and textbook finish checking along the length of the body that confirm the authenticity of the factory paint. The guitar displays only light wear at the edges of the body and the original frets are in fine shape with a long useful life ahead of them.
Your purchase includes the original tremolo arm and the gray Victoria Luggage case with “Fender” neck strap. This rare pre-CBS Fender has been set up to factory specs by our tech and you’re sure to enjoy the playing experience and classic tone. The slider switches offer plenty of options for in phase and out of phase sounds. The transitional 1964 Fender Champ shown in the photos is available separately and will be listed soon.
