Rare Ebony Block SG Standard
Gibson’s ebony block variation of the SG Standard featured an inlaid ebony ornament on the body to cleverly disguise the Vibrola tailpiece attachment screws. The engraved Les Paul truss rod cover technically makes this solidbody electric a Les Paul Standard. With potentiometer date codes from March 1963, this guitar must be one of the very last Les Pauls produced under his first Gibson endorsement agreement.
Even better than the ebony block and Les Paul truss rod cover, are the original PAF humbucking pickups which have never been rewound. All of the electronics, including the PAFs, are original to the guitar and produce an amazing range of expressive tones. The original nickel PAF covers were loose, so the guitar went to pickup wizard Tom Brantley to resolder the covers and check under the hood. Tom verified that the original windings were still intact and took the opportunity to touch up some of the solder joints.
There are no other repairs: the neck joint is unbroken and rock solid, and thankfully this SG never had a headstock break. The cherry color has faded to a pleasing shade of autumn leaves. The original lacquer finish is heavily checked and worn with authentic patina that can’t be duplicated. With its comfortable, broken-in feel, playing this special PAF Gibson is an inspiring experience for the ears and hands alike. Includes the yellow plush lined Faultless hard case with Gibson badge on the side.
