The Legendary Thunderbolt Amp
Supro designed and marketed the 35 watt Thunderbolt as a bass amp but we know today it makes the perfect platform for overdriven blues and rock guitar. The Thunderbolt is simple to use with only tone and volume controls, and a bare minimum of four tubes. The big trapezoid-shaped cabinet and 15″ speaker help shape the signature sound. Here’s what the Supro catalog has to say about it:
“Quality, value, and performance have made this one of today’s most wanted bass amplifiers; No unnecessary frills… no extra weight… just true, clean, deep bass reproduction. The chrome plated, 35 watt power chassis has two bass inputs, and individual volume and tone controls: 15″ Jensen Bass Speaker; 4 tubes – 2 Dual Purpose for 6 Tube Performance plus 4 Silicon Diodes. Solid Lock-corner cabinet is 23 5/8″ wide x 19″ high x 11 1/2″ deep, and has Durable Midnight Blue Vinyl Covering; Replaceable Easy Access 3 Amp Fuse; Weight 38 lbs. Protective Slip Cover Available.”
This vintage S6420 surfaced in unmodified condition with its the original transformers and the original 15″ Jensen C15 PS speaker. Freshly serviced with a grounded 3 prong gray plug and a few new tubes (originals included). The gray/blue covering still looks fresh, although the chrome chassis shows corrosion from its time in the Florida environment. Enjoy the legendary tone of a handwired vintage Supro tube amplifier with this Thunderbolt.
